UK Beer Sales fall by 7% as credit crunch continues

Posted by admin On October - 27 - 2008

Figures released by the BBPA (British Beer and Pub Association) show that UK sales of beer has fallen by 7.2% in the months July through September of 2008. This marks the biggest Q3 sales decline for over 10 years.

Sales of beer in pubs, clubs and restaurants were worst hit, falling by 8.1% and beer sales in supermarkets and shops also saw a 6% fall compared to the same period of last year. It is estimated that there could be as much as 160 million fewer pints sold in Q3 in 2008, equating to 1.8 million fewer pints being sold a day.

The latest figures reinforce the reality that people are cutting out luxuries due to the credit crunch and the forecast of a UK recession. Also published were the figures that as many as 5 pubs a day were closing due to the downturn in the market.
