A Californian man suspected of drink driving evaded police by jumping in the sea and swimming off only for his passenger, who was still in the car to give police his details. The 28 year old man, who has not been named, was pulled over in Pacific Beach at around 2:30am and proceeded to jump out of his pickup truck the run towards the shoreline before swimming off out of sight.
Police alerted the Coast Guard who instigated a search and rescue mission which continued until the daylight hours. A spokesman for the Police said, “When the sun came up, it was the first opportunity to go out and take a look with actual light instead of that dark, so that’s why you saw another effort by lifeguards and the Coast Guard this morning.”
A few hour later, a family member of the man called police to say that he had been in touch and would hand himself in to authorities.
The police spokesman added, “We ask that he call the San Diego Police Department so we know, indeed, that he is safe.”
