Ship hits the Eggner Ferry Bridge in Kentucky

A cargo ship carrying rocket equipment hit the Eggner Ferry Bridge last week causing a 300ft hole as the asphalt and metal structure got entangled on the ship’s bow.

Thankfully no-one was hurt as at the time there were only four cars on the bridge, which can carry up to 2,800 car per day. The ships 20 crew members also escape injury as the ship destroyed two section of the bridge.

The Governor of Kentucky Steve Beshear told the press, “We are grateful that this wreck caused no injuries or loss of life.

“Since that bridge carries 2,800 cars every day, we were very fortunate that no one was on the span at that time”.

He added that, “We’ll turn our attention to a full inspection of the bridge and determine what steps we can take next to speed up the replacement of that important artery”.

An investigation is still on going into the incident.

Suspected drunk driver evades police by jumping in the sea

A Californian man suspected of drink driving evaded police by jumping in the sea and swimming off only for his passenger, who was still in the car to give police his details. The 28 year old man, who has not been named, was pulled over in Pacific Beach at around 2:30am and proceeded to jump out of his pickup truck the run towards the shoreline before swimming off out of sight.

Police alerted the Coast Guard who instigated a search and rescue mission which continued until the daylight hours. A spokesman for the Police said, “When the sun came up, it was the first opportunity to go out and take a look with actual light instead of that dark, so that’s why you saw another effort by lifeguards and the Coast Guard this morning.”

A few hour later, a family member of the man called police to say that he had been in touch and would hand himself in to authorities.

The police spokesman added, “We ask that he call the San Diego Police Department so we know, indeed, that he is safe.”

Canadian man uses iPad to cross US border

A Canadian man called Martin Reisch has told the press that he managed to cross the Canada/US border after he forgot his passport by showing the officials a scanned version on his iPad.

Mr Reisch, who was travelling to Vermont from Montreal noticed he had left his passport at home just before the border crossing. He told the official that he was travelling to Vermont to deliver some Christmas presents and showed the digital copy of his passport.

Mr Reisch told the Associated Press, “I thought I’d at least give it a try,” adding; “He took the iPad into the little border hut. He was in there a good five, six minutes. It seemed like an eternity. When he came back, he took a good long pause before wishing me a Merry Christmas”.

The 33 year old Canadian managed to re-enter Canada later in the day and has vowed not to forget his passport in the future.

Plane hijack fear after pilot gets trapped in toilet

A Chautauqua Airlines pilot sparked a hijacking scare when he got stuck in a toilet during a flight from North Carolina to New York. The pilot inadvertently locked himself in the toilet around 30 minutes before the plane was due to land.

The co-pilot became worried that something was going on when a passenger with a ‘thick foreign accent’ tried to enter the cockpit to tell them the problem. The co-pilot notified air-traffic control about the situation saying, “He [the pilot] is stuck in the lav and someone with a thick foreign accent is giving me a password to access the cockpit – and I’m not about to let him in.”

The plane landed without incident, with the red faced pilot saying that he had to answer the call of nature around half an hour before the plane was due to land, but had become trapped.

Mattel announces plan to buy Thomas the Tank Engine company

US toy manufacturer Mattel, famous for its Barbie doll, Fisher-Price and Hot Wheels toy has announce that it plans to buy HIT Entertainment in a cash deal worth $680 million. HIT Entertainment own the rights to Thomas the Tank Engine and other popular toy brands, many of which Mattel already produce under licence.

The new deal means that Mattel will now own the rights to manufacture children’s toys such as Barney the purple dinosaur, Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder. The president of HIT Entertainment Jeffery D. Dunn talked about the deal saying, “HIT entertainment owns some of the most loved and trusted preschool brands in the world and under Mattel’s leadership, I look forward to seeing them grow”.

The chairman of Mattel Robert Eckert said, “Mattel is the right home for Thomas and Friends. This powerhouse brand is joining the ranks of such iconic brands as Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-price and American girl.”

A 39 year old Detroit man has been arrested after he made his 9 year old daughter drive him to the petrol station because he was drunk. The incident was captured on the petrol stations CCTV as the van pulled into the station early in the morning.

The man, who was named by the police as Shawn Weimer told the station clerk that his daughter was driving him around as he was too drunk to drive; he was then caught on camera dancing in the forecourt before entering his van in the passenger seat.

The station clerk alerted police and the pair were pulled over by police a couple of miles down the road. According to the officers making the arrest, the girl seemed surprised that she had been pulled over saying that her father had been drinking all night and that she had driven the van before.

A hungry squirrel chewed trough a power cable in Greenwich, Connecticut cutting power off to more than 15,000 people it has been revealed. A spokesperson for Connecticut Light & Power stated that the squirrel was zapped by thousands of volts of power and died instantly; this in turn caused equipment in the substation to malfunction plunging a huge part of the town into darkness.

The incident happened around 8am and caused several hours of power outages in the town. Police were sent to the affected areas of the town to direct traffic during rush hour as the traffic lights were out due to the power outage.

A spokeswoman for the Greenwich School District said that five of its schools were affected, but they all had generators which meant that classes went on as usual.

Henry Winkler, aka the Fonz gets honorary OBE

The Queen has honoured Henry Winkler, famous for his role as the Fonz in the 70’s US sitcom Happy Days with an honorary OBE for his work on promoting dyslexia awareness in the United Kingdom. Mr Winkler received his award at the British embassy in Washington which was presented to him by the British ambassador Nigel Sheinwald.

The US actor was diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult and has spent the last two years touring UK schools talking to pupils about the disability. Mr Winkler posted a picture of himself with the OBE on his twitter page saying, “Here I am with my OBE pinned on Very honoured very proud…”.

The Queen gives honorary awards to non-British citizens on advice from the UK Foreign Office; it is not clear if the Queen is a fan of the US actor’s role in Happy Days as the Fonz.

Police have arrested a 32 year old businessman at Heathrow airport after he threatened to stab the pilots of his British Airways flight. Witnesses state that the man got angry when he was refused more alcohol on the Phoenix to London jet and produced a shard of glass stating that he was going to stab the pilots.

Mr Bradley was remanded by police after the jet landed and later appeared in court charged with common assault and being drunk on an aircraft. He was remanded in custody and will appear for sentencing on the 23rd of September.

A fellow passenger who witnessed the incident told the press, “”He was shouting at customers and crew, swearing, stumbling about the cabin”. Adding that; “He was swearing at the manager of the crew. He pushed him in the galley and wanted to know why he was refused more wine.”

She went on to say that, “At one stage I could see him holding a broken glass.”

A British Airways spokesman said: “We do not tolerate abusive behaviour towards our staff or customers”, adding; “Although the cabin crew tried to pacify the passenger, his behaviour continued to be unacceptable and the flight was met by the police.”

A Utah man faces a fine for disorderly conduct after paying for a medical bill with 2,500 pennies. The man entered the Basin Clinic in Vernal to dispute a $25 medical bill that was outstanding reports local press and after asking if they accepted cash poured 2,500 pennies on the counter and floor.

The man then demanded that the staff count the money; shortly after the Vernal Police were called to sort the situation out. Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell said that the man had upset staff at the clinic after the pennies were strewn everywhere and that the man’s actions served, “no legitimate purpose”.

Police have charged the 38 year old man with disorderly conduct and if he is found guilty faces a fine of up to $140 (or 14,000 pennies), although he will probably have to pay the fine with bigger denominations of money.
