California is the home of sun, sea and sand, but now you won’t be able to enjoy the popular pastime of Frisbee throwing on its beaches as it has been banned. Fines of up to $100 will be given out to anyone who disobeys the rules, which also includes no balls except volleyballs and no hole digging deeper than 18 inches.
The bans have been introduced to various beaches throughout California following pressure from lifeguards patrolling the beaches. A spokesperson for the lifeguards, Carol Baker told the press, “Our beaches are very popular” adding that, “This is simply about keeping them safe”.
It is estimated that between 50 and 70 million people visit California’s beaches each year.
Authorities have stated that the ban will only be enforced between May and September and that designated areas of the beach will be made available for ball and Frisbee sports.
Lifeguards have been growing ever more concerned that more and more people have been trampled on while sunbathing by sports players and, that big holes in the sand can impede their rescue vehicles getting to accidents. The new bans should help to keep the beaches a safer place.
