Ship hits the Eggner Ferry Bridge in Kentucky

Posted by admin On January - 29 - 2012

A cargo ship carrying rocket equipment hit the Eggner Ferry Bridge last week causing a 300ft hole as the asphalt and metal structure got entangled on the ship’s bow.

Thankfully no-one was hurt as at the time there were only four cars on the bridge, which can carry up to 2,800 car per day. The ships 20 crew members also escape injury as the ship destroyed two section of the bridge.

The Governor of Kentucky Steve Beshear told the press, “We are grateful that this wreck caused no injuries or loss of life.

“Since that bridge carries 2,800 cars every day, we were very fortunate that no one was on the span at that time”.

He added that, “We’ll turn our attention to a full inspection of the bridge and determine what steps we can take next to speed up the replacement of that important artery”.

An investigation is still on going into the incident.

Indonesian Rail officials unveiled their latest campaign to try and stamp out train surfing passengers, concrete balls suspended from custom made bridges. Train surfers, also known as Atappers or Roofers are usually fare dodgers or thrill seekers looking to escape the over populated carriages.

A spokesperson for the rail company told the press, “We’ve tried just about everything, even putting rolls of barbed wire on the roof, but nothing seems to work. Maybe this will do it.”

The first set of concrete balls were fitted near a station just outside of the city of Jakarta, but it was later revealed that the fitters had made the chains too short meaning that there was a sizable gap between to top of the train and the concrete balls.

One 27 year old train surfer believes that this new campaign won’t be effective, he said, “They’ve tried everything to keep us from riding, but in the end we always win.”

Rail officials hope that this new campaign will be a success, and if so will be rolled out to other parts of the country.

An 85 year old woman is in critical condition in Buenos Aires after being hit by a falling cat after it was thrown from an apartment block. It turns out that the cat was thrown from a fourth floor apartment when a married couple has a blazing row and hit the elderly woman on the head as she crossed the street below.

The couple admitted that during the row, the husband picked up the cat and hurled it at his wife who ducked. The feline flew out of an open window and onto the street below.

The elderly woman, who has been named as Betty, is a former opera singer and coincidently a neighbour of the quarrelling couple. Hospital staff say that she is in critical condition after suffering a suspected fractured skull; the cat however did not survive the incident.

Patrick McCrystal got a shock when he came back to his car and discovered he had a parking ticket after double yellow lines were painted under his vehicle. The 49 year old, who regularly parked his car in between two sets of yellow lines got a £70 fine and to make matters worse had yellow paint on his bumper.

Mr McCrystal told the press, “I couldn’t believe my eyes. They had extended the existing set of lines underneath my car, and then a warden had slapped a ticket on it”. He also added, “When I parked there were double yellows in front of my car, double yellows behind my car, but nothing in between.

“It has been my regular spot for two years and there was nothing to indicate I couldn’t park there.”

The fine was later rescinded by Derby City Council who said that the ticket was issued by error.

A Californian man suspected of drink driving evaded police by jumping in the sea and swimming off only for his passenger, who was still in the car to give police his details. The 28 year old man, who has not been named, was pulled over in Pacific Beach at around 2:30am and proceeded to jump out of his pickup truck the run towards the shoreline before swimming off out of sight.

Police alerted the Coast Guard who instigated a search and rescue mission which continued until the daylight hours. A spokesman for the Police said, “When the sun came up, it was the first opportunity to go out and take a look with actual light instead of that dark, so that’s why you saw another effort by lifeguards and the Coast Guard this morning.”

A few hour later, a family member of the man called police to say that he had been in touch and would hand himself in to authorities.

The police spokesman added, “We ask that he call the San Diego Police Department so we know, indeed, that he is safe.”

Canadian man uses iPad to cross US border

A Canadian man called Martin Reisch has told the press that he managed to cross the Canada/US border after he forgot his passport by showing the officials a scanned version on his iPad.

Mr Reisch, who was travelling to Vermont from Montreal noticed he had left his passport at home just before the border crossing. He told the official that he was travelling to Vermont to deliver some Christmas presents and showed the digital copy of his passport.

Mr Reisch told the Associated Press, “I thought I’d at least give it a try,” adding; “He took the iPad into the little border hut. He was in there a good five, six minutes. It seemed like an eternity. When he came back, he took a good long pause before wishing me a Merry Christmas”.

The 33 year old Canadian managed to re-enter Canada later in the day and has vowed not to forget his passport in the future.

A Swedish woman got a nice surprise after finding her wedding ring she lost 16 years ago growing on a carrot in her garden. Lena Paulson had taken the ring off when she was baking Christmas treats with her daughters in 1995 and had been lost ever since.

Mrs Paahlsson looked everywhere for the ring, even pulling up the floorboards in her kitchen to no avail, until last October when she was picking her home-grown carrots and noticed that one of them was sparkling.

The ring no longer fits Mrs Paahlsson, but she told the local Swedish press that she plans to get it enlarged. She said, “I had given up hope. Now that I have found the ring again … I want to be able to use it”.
