A man appeared in court yesterday charged with impersonating a police officer after he stole a female officer’s uniform to get into the Isle of Wight Festival.

Daniel Tredinnick didn’t have a ticket for the festival, but wanted to see his favourite band Kasabian headline the prestigious event so he broke into a police car and stole a uniform before sneaking into the festival grounds.

Once Mr Tredinnick was inside he managed to fool both security guards and real police officers and even began keeping the peace by breaking up a fight, helping find a missing person and assisted in treating an injured festival goer.

The facade was up after two and a half hours after an eagle-eyed security guard realised that Mr Tredinnick wasn’t wearing a hat or tie and asked him for some ID.

Mr Tredinnick pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer and stealing a police uniform, he was given a sixteen week suspended sentence.

Overdue library book returned after 122 years

Staff at the Camden Library in Sydney got a surprise after a first edition of Insectivorous Plants by Charles Darwin was returned over 122 years late. The library stamp inside the book showed that the book had last been borrowed on the 30th January 1889.

Staff at the library estimated that the late fees for the book would be about AUD $35,000 (nearly £23,000). The book had been part of a private collection for the last 50 years, before being given to a local university then passed back to the library.

The library’s manager of community services said that, “It has obviously had an interesting journey in that time from what we can tell it ended up in the private collection of an elderly gentleman who gave it to the University of Sydney Farms library when he moved out of the area”.

She also added: “They saw the stamp in it and sent it to us and we were absolutely thrilled, here’s this fantastic aged book that can go back into our collection.”

Staff at the library said that the fine would not be in effect as the book was returned during the library’s ‘fine amnesty month’ where people can return their overdue books in exchange for charity donations.

The library stated that the book would not be lent out again, but will be on display in the library so that people can see it.

Online dating site BeautifulPeople.com admitted that it had been hit by a Shrek virus that allowed ‘ugly’ people to join without being rated first. Traditionally members to the site have to go through a screening process where existing users rate them and if they are deemed attractive enough they are accepted. But last month the rating process was hit by a virus allowing anyone to join.

The website owners had to apologise to 30,000 people who were wrongly admitted to the popular dating site, they have since been removed from the site. Managing director Greg Hodge said, ”We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting,”

He went on to say, ”We responded immediately, repairing the damage from the Shrek virus and putting every new member back into the rating module for a legitimate and democratic vote. The result is that we have lost over 30,000 recent members.

”We have sincere regret for the unfortunate people who were wrongly admitted to the site and who believed, albeit for a short while, that they were beautiful”.

The origin of the virus is still being investigated by BeautifulPeople.com and safeguards have been put in place to stop any future attacks.

Man shots off finger trying to remove a wart

A 38 year old man from Doncaster shot off his own finger when he tried to remove a wart with a shotgun. Security guard Sean Murphy had gone to the doctors repeatedly about the problem wart and tried a range of different treatments and cream before hatching the bizarre plan.

Of course instead of the shotgun cleanly blasting his wart into oblivion, it also took half of his middle finger off with it. To make matters worse, Mr Murphy also landed himself in trouble with the police for illegal possession of a firearm.

Mr Murphy, who was given a suspended 16 week prison sentence and 100 hours of community service, claimed that he had found the gun under a bush near his workplace. After hearing the verdict Mr Murphy said, “I know I could have gone to jail for up to 15 years for a firearms offence. My solicitor did a very good job. The best thing is that the wart has gone. It was giving me lot of trouble”.

British man Bruce Masters has made it into the record books as he visits 45,000 pubs on the ultimate pub crawl. The 66 year olds journey started in 1960 and since then he has clocked up an estimated million miles of travel and 25,000 pints.

Mr Masters has kept a log of every pub he has visited and has now collated it on his computer, the watering holes include airport departure bars and cross-country train bars. Mr Masters travels everywhere by train and has no intentions of stopping any time soon, he said, “There are still a great many pubs I have not been to. If something is worth doing, it is worth doing properly.”

He also added that his wife Violet isn’t too happy of his record saying, “But she does not begrudge me doing this, she just prefers to stay at home.”

Genetically modified cows produce human breast milk

Scientists in China have genetically modified cows to produce human breast milk and plan to be selling it in supermarkets within three years. The milk that is produced by the dairy cows is identical to human breast milk, containing the same antibacterial and immune boosting qualities as its human counterpart.

Scientists at the Agricultural University in Beijing bred 300 dairy cows; human genes were inserted into cow embryos and implanted into surrogate cows. The procedure was similar to that of Dolly the sheep; the first mammal to be successfully cloned.

The same scientists have also genetically modified cows to be resistant to mad cow’s disease and modified beef cattle to provide more nutritious meat.

The cow/human milk is undergoing safety checks and if it passes will be sold to customers as a more nutritious drink than standard cow’s milk.

A Utah man faces a fine for disorderly conduct after paying for a medical bill with 2,500 pennies. The man entered the Basin Clinic in Vernal to dispute a $25 medical bill that was outstanding reports local press and after asking if they accepted cash poured 2,500 pennies on the counter and floor.

The man then demanded that the staff count the money; shortly after the Vernal Police were called to sort the situation out. Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell said that the man had upset staff at the clinic after the pennies were strewn everywhere and that the man’s actions served, “no legitimate purpose”.

Police have charged the 38 year old man with disorderly conduct and if he is found guilty faces a fine of up to $140 (or 14,000 pennies), although he will probably have to pay the fine with bigger denominations of money.
