Posted by infozone On November - 29 - 2010

A pensioner from Gumperda, East Germany bricked himself in his own cellar after attempting to seal it off to save on his heating bills. The pensioner told police that he had only realised what he’d done after he had finished.

The pensioner stayed in the cellar for a couple of days before trying to escape, but in a bizarre twist he opted to demolish a neighbour’s wall instead of the one he had just completed. Neighbour’s alerted police after hearing loud drilling noises coming from their own cellar wall.

The 64 year old eventually got free only to be detained by police for criminal damage and trespassing.

US Air Force warns troops about using social networking sites

An official warning has been issued by the US Air Force to its troops that using social networking sites such as Facebook or Foursquare could reveal their locations to enemy troops. The warning said that troops could inadvertently cause ‘devastating operations security and privacy implications’ as many social networking sites allow the users location to be pinpointed on a map.

The US has nearly 50,000 troops in Iraq and 95,000 troops in Afghanistan; the US Army is also set to send a similar warning to its troops on the front line.

Medway Council claim cty status early

Posted by infozone On November - 10 - 2010

Medway Council have been blamed for wasting taxpayers’ money after rebranding and giving itself city status two years early. It will be officially decided if Medway will be elevated to city status in 2012 as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, but that hasn’t stopped council officials from rebranding stationery, letter heads and even council dust carts with a new City of Medway logo.

The council has spent more than £11,000 on the rebranding program, which has been branded as a waste of money, especially since the council has been told to cut spending by £50 million over the next four years.

The local authority of Medway was set up in 1998 and consists of five main towns, Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester, Strood and Rainham.

Medway council has had two previous attempts of securing city status declined; these were in 2000 and 2002.

Postman won’t deliver to pensioner because of overgrown garden

Posted by infozone On November - 9 - 2010

Bosses at Royal Mail have banned it’s postmen from delivering mail to a pensioner because of his overgrown garden. The pensioner Kenneth Payne has not received any mail for 4 months as Royal Mail bosses fear that postmen could slip or be scratched by the overgrown bushes.

Mr Payne, who has lived in his bungalow in Bury St Edmunds for over 25 years condemned the ruling as: “health and safety gone mad”.

He went on to say, “My letter box is perfectly accessible. I take offense at their gross impertinence. As long as they can get to the letter box, it’s none of their business.”

Royal Mail sent a letter out in August stating that, “Staff are experiencing difficulties delivering to your address due to overgrown shrubs and sightings of vermin”. Mr Payne rejects allegations of vermin and refuses to trim his garden bushes, he said, “If they could get to the door to deliver the letter telling me my service was suspended, clearly its accessible”.

A representative from Royal Mail stated that: “We are looking for an acceptable resolution to this issue”.

Walkers Crisps new weather prediction game on promotional packs could cost the company up to a million pounds as it’s too easy to win. Betting analysts and bookmakers have said that the game, where people predict where in the UK it’s going to rain is too easy with an 8 to 1 chance of winning.

Walkers has already paid out an estimated £660,000 since the promotion began last month and there is still time left to enter with two weeks left to run. Players pick one of 21,000 squares on a map of Britain and choose a time slot, if it rains on their square during the time they have specified they win £10. The results are verified by the Met Office and winners notified.
